Northern Circuit Route + Mweka Descent

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s longest and most isolated route, circling the quiet northern slopes near the Kenyan border before summiting from the east and descending the classic southern Mweka Route. The Mweka section is the designated descent for most camping routes and is known for its steep, knee-testing terrain and rapid drop through multiple ecosystems.

Day 7: Third Cave Camp to School Hut

3,870 m → 4,750 m | ~5 km | 4–5 hrs
Trek onto the vast desert Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. Early rest before summit night.

Day 8: Summit Day – School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp (Mweka Descent Focus)

4,750 m → 5,895 m → ~3,100 m | ~16 km total | 12–16 hrs

Ascent (midnight start): Rise around 11:30 pm–midnight for hot tea and biscuits. Climb in darkness up the steep scree and rocky slopes of the eastern side past Gilman’s Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim, then continue along the rim to Stella Point and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Arrive near dawn for sunrise views across the glaciers and the vast crater.

Mweka Descent begins immediately after the summit:

After a short time at the summit for photos, turn around and begin the long southern descent. Retrace briefly past Stella Point, then drop steeply down the south face on loose volcanic scree and rocky switchbacks. This upper section is dry, barren, and demanding on the knees—trekking poles are highly recommended.

Continue past the Barafu area (often a short lunch or rest stop around 4,600–4,700 m), then keep descending through alpine desert and into the moorland zone. The trail remains steep and rocky in places before gradually easing. You drop roughly 2,800 m in elevation on this day alone.

Arrive at Mweka Camp (~3,100 m), located at the transition into the upper forest/moorland. The air feels noticeably thicker and richer. Expect possible mist or light rain in the late afternoon. Enjoy a hot meal and the final night on the mountain after one of the longest and most exhausting days of the trek.

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (Final Mweka Descent)

~3,100 m → 1,640 m | ~10 km | 3–5 hrs

Wake to thicker air and continue the well-built but often muddy trail through lush tropical montane cloud forest. The path is steeper in sections with roots, rocks, and frequent mud after rain—poles remain useful.

The environment changes dramatically from the barren high slopes of previous days: dense vegetation, moss-covered trees, bird calls, and possible sightings of colobus or blue monkeys. The humidity rises and the forest feels alive.

Reach Mweka Gate (1,640 m), sign out of the park, and collect your summit certificates (gold for Uhuru Peak). Celebrate with your team, tip your guides and porters, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Mweka Descent Highlights & Tips

  • Total elevation loss from Uhuru Peak to Mweka Gate: ~4,255 m.
  • The upper scree is the most physically taxing on the knees; the lower forest section is scenic but can be slippery.
  • Poles, good boots, and layered clothing are essential.
  • The rapid descent rewards you with a striking contrast of ecosystems in a short time—alpine desert to rainforest in roughly 24 hours.

This itinerary maximizes the remote northern experience while delivering the classic, efficient southern Mweka descent used by most camping routes. Times and exact distances can vary with weather, fitness, and group pace.
